A Brother's Support
Before leaving New York for his journey back to Hollywood, Walt sent a telegram to his brother Roy, assuring him that everything was okay. But behind the scenes, the situation was dire. Walt had just lost his successful cartoon character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and most of his Disney artists to a brazen theft by Universal distributor Charles Mintz. Walt knew he had to come up with a new character, and fast.
The Birth of Mickey Mouse
During that fateful train ride, Walt conceived of a new cartoon subject - a mouse. This idea was further developed by Ub Iwerks and named by Walt's wife, Lillian. The first completed Mickey Mouse cartoon was "Plane Crazy," inspired by Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic. However, it failed to obtain distribution, as did the second cartoon, "The Gallopin' Gaucho."
Steamboat Willie: Mickey's Triumph
The third time proved to be the charm for Mickey Mouse. On November 18, 1928, "Steamboat Willie" premiered at New York's Colony Theatre. This cartoon was one of the first to successfully utilize synchronized sound and became an instant hit. Walt received a record-breaking $1,000 for a two-week run, and Mickey Mouse became a star. Walt Disney Studios was saved, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Ever-Changing Birthday
Interestingly, Mickey Mouse's "official" birthday changed dates for years after his debut. It wasn't until 1978 that Dave Smith, the founder of the Disney Archives, determined that the premiere of "Steamboat Willie" was truly Mickey Mouse's first public appearance, thus establishing his date of birth as November 18, 1928.
Minnie Mouse: A Shared Birthday
With Mickey's birthday now set, it also became the birthday of his beloved companion, Minnie Mouse. In the cartoon "Steamboat Willie," Minnie is seen rushing along the riverbanks to catch Pegleg Pete's steamboat.
