Are you a student looking to expand your knowledge or gain new skills? The University of Illinois offers a range of online degrees, certificates, and courses that can help you achieve your goals. Whether you're a high school student, an undergraduate or graduate student from another university, or a working professional, non-degree study at the University of Illinois might be the perfect fit for you.

Non-Degree Study: The Path to Success

Illinois' online programs provide learners from all over the world with the opportunity to continue their education, enhance their training, and explore their passions. As a non-degree student, you will have access to the same world-class instructors as degree-seeking students, but with some important differences in the registration process, available courses, certificates of completion, and more.

To ensure your educational journey goes smoothly, here's a quick guide to some of the most frequently asked questions that non-degree students have:

How to Register as a Non-Degree Student

Registering as a non-degree student is a straightforward process. Simply complete your online registration through the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL). Make sure to submit your online registration form at least two weeks prior to the start date of the course to secure your seat. Department approval may be required for enrollment in some courses.

Programs and Courses Available to Non-Degree Students

Non-degree students have access to a variety of learning options, including undergraduate certificate programs, graduate certificate programs, online courses, and NetMath courses. When browsing the list of online course offerings, filter the results by selecting "show only courses open to non-degree" under the Student Type filter. Remember, non-degree students can enroll in up to three course sections at a time.

ID Card and Technical Support

Online students may request a photoless ID card by submitting a form to CITL. It's important to note that you must be officially enrolled in a course before a card can be issued to you. Additionally, ensure that your personal computer meets the necessary technology requirements for your course. Technical support is available for Zoom, Canvas, Moodle, and more. If you encounter any login or access problems, or need assistance with computer or application features, reach out to Technology Services’ Help Desk.

Course Syllabus and Withdrawal Process

To obtain the course syllabus, contact the instructor of each of your enrolled courses. Course instructors can be found in the Course Explorer, along with their contact information. If you need to withdraw from a course, submit both the Change of Status and Withdrawal/Cancellation forms to CITL for processing.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition and fees for courses vary, so it's best to refer to the graduate program or undergraduate online course cost charts for estimated costs. Unfortunately, non-degree students are not eligible for federal and state financial aid. However, certain colleges, universities, employers, organizations, or military affiliations may offer tuition reimbursement or financial support for online courses at Illinois. Contact your institution, employer, organization, or military benefits plan administrator for more information. If you are eligible for a tuition waiver, the Office of Student Financial Aid will apply it to your account.

Payment Options

Student payments are handled by the University Bursar's Office. Visit their website for information on how to pay your bill.
