We're stepping into a new era where artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an essential part of our everyday work. The tools we use for work management should be intelligent, helping us stay focused and productive. However, when these tools don't work together, they can actually slow us down.

Did you know that the average employee spends more than 57% of their time communicating, instead of driving outcomes? And a whopping 59% of employees feel that their collaboration tools are not aligned with how their teams prefer to work. It's clear that there's a need for a solution that brings everything together and embraces the power of AI.

That's why Microsoft is proud to introduce the new Microsoft Planner—a unified work management solution that combines the simplicity of Microsoft To Do, the collaboration of Microsoft Planner, the power of Microsoft Project for the web, and the intelligence of Microsoft Copilot. This revolutionary tool will help you manage all your tasks, plans, and projects in one simple, familiar experience.

Manage Tasks and Plans Effortlessly

With the new Microsoft Planner, you'll discover a whole new way of managing tasks and plans. Whether you're an individual working on a specific plan or part of a team focused on a larger project, Planner has you covered. You can align your work with goals and key strategic objectives, ensuring that every task contributes to the bigger picture. From simple task management to enterprise project management, Planner scales effortlessly to meet your needs.

The new Planner app will be available in Microsoft Teams in early 2024, with a web experience coming later in the year. Sign up to be the first to know when the new Planner will be available as a preview and generally available.

Intelligent and Accelerated

The new Microsoft Planner harnesses the power of AI to help you achieve outcomes faster. With copilot support from Microsoft Copilot (coming in Spring 2024), you can generate new plans, set goals, track status, and adapt to changes effortlessly. Copilot's natural-language prompts make work and project management faster and easier than ever before.

A Seamless Integration with Microsoft 365

The new Planner doesn't exist in isolation—it seamlessly integrates with other Microsoft 365 experiences. You can bring existing Planner plans into a Loop workspace, keeping your team plans alongside other project content in one place. Emails flagged in Outlook and action items assigned to you from Teams meetings are also visible in Planner.

Task Management for Frontline Teams

The new Planner includes dedicated features for frontline organizations. Leaders can define the work to be done across their frontline locations and monitor completion using task publishing. These features were previously part of the Tasks app in Teams and will continue to empower frontline workers.

What's Coming in the New Planner

The rollout timeline for the new Planner is as follows:

  • Early 2024: The new Planner app will be generally available in Microsoft Teams, and the current Tasks by Planner and To Do app in Teams will be renamed to Planner.
  • Later in 2024: The new Planner web experience will be generally available, incorporating the features you love from Microsoft Project for the web.

The new Planner will also feature enhanced Enterprise Work Management (EWM) capabilities, including baselines, portfolios, and lead-lag capability, bringing even greater control and visibility to your projects.

Continued Support for Our Customers

Microsoft remains committed to supporting our customers. Project desktop, Project Online, and Project Server will continue to be available and supported for both existing and new customers. Project Online, in particular, has no scheduled end of service date.

Current users of Microsoft Project for the web can rest assured that the capabilities they currently use and love will be available under the new name, Planner. The Planner Power App will continue to enable customized reporting through Power BI and configurable workflows through Power Automate. Premium experiences in the new Planner, based on your Project plan subscriptions, will be available at no additional cost.
