Less walking, more convenience - Milwaukee's unique advantage

Milwaukee's compact footprint is poised to make a big impact on the upcoming Republican National Convention. Unlike larger host cities, Milwaukee's smaller size and close proximity of event venues offer unparalleled convenience and ease of navigation for attendees. From transportation to hotel accommodations and more, these factors play a crucial role in ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for all.

Minimizing Time on Buses Adds to Experience

Nobody wants to spend countless hours on a bus each day, and in Milwaukee, that won't be an issue. The convention "complex" in the heart of the city ensures that attendees can easily walk between venues, minimizing the need for transportation. With the Fiserv Forum as the main venue for televised events, delegates and media members can stroll to the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena and Baird Center without any hassle. This efficient layout saves time, money, and ensures everyone's safety.

Steve King, a board member of the 2024 RNC Host Committee and former CEO, draws comparisons to the successful 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland. He highlights the similarities between the two cities, emphasizing the walkable eating districts and close proximity of entertainment options. King believes that Milwaukee's walkability factor will contribute significantly to the convention's success.

The importance of Milwaukee's walkability is further echoed by Anne Hathaway, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee team organizing the event. She emphasizes that the layout of Milwaukee is highly appealing, and delegates, media, and guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the cityscape on foot. The concentration of venues in downtown Milwaukee is undeniably useful, although other areas in the city and region will host various RNC events.

A Larger City Means More Hotel Space

In contrast to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where key sites are miles apart, the Republican convention in Milwaukee offers close proximity between venues. While the smaller size of Milwaukee may limit the number of hotels within immediate reach, the city makes up for it with nearby regions such as Wauwatosa, Brookfield, Racine, Kenosha, Lake Geneva, and downtown Madison. Convention planners have already secured 95% of the required 14,000 hotel rooms for the event.

Despite the distance to some hotels, Steve King sees this as a minor inconvenience rather than a disadvantage. He argues that mid-sized cities like Milwaukee have their unique advantages over larger cities, and the proximity of hotels in Milwaukee has already been planned meticulously to ensure a comfortable stay for delegates. The Secret Service, responsible for security planning, is currently developing a comprehensive security plan for the convention.

Nominee's Influence on the Tenor of the Event

The party's nominee plays a pivotal role in shaping the atmosphere and messaging of a political convention. The race for the Republican nomination, led by former President Donald Trump and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, is expected to create two significantly different conventions between the Republicans and Democrats. Matt Hill, spokesperson for the Democratic National Convention, emphasizes their focus on building a convention centered around President Biden and the accomplishments of the Democratic Party.

Elise Dickens, CEO of the Committee on Arrangements, counters with a bold statement, highlighting the energy and hope that the Republican nominee will bring to Wisconsin and American voters. She contrasts this with what she perceives as a lackluster approach from the Democrats. The Republican National Convention aims to create an unforgettable experience and showcase their nominee, who they believe will put America on the right path forward.

Milwaukee's compact footprint and strategic planning are sure to make the Republican National Convention a resounding success. Attendees can look forward to a seamless experience that maximizes convenience, minimizes travel time, and provides ample opportunities to explore the vibrant city of Milwaukee. As the event unfolds, the positive feedback and experiences shared by delegates, media, and guests will undoubtedly serve as powerful marketing for the city, attracting future conventions and further solidifying Milwaukee's reputation as a top host city.
