Feeling the need to infuse some enchantment and playfulness into your Christmas decorations? Look no further – it's time to create your very own Whoville Christmas tree! Contrary to popular belief, making a Grinch tree is simpler than you think and will leave everyone in awe of your unique decor. So, let's dive into the magical world of Whoville and discover how to make a Grinch tree for Christmas.

Add Cheer With a Whoville Christmas Tree

Picture yourself in the year 2011, feeling a bit down during the Christmas holidays. Suddenly, like a ray of hope, a Grinch tree entered my life and saved Christmas! You can read all about this magical experience and even witness the uncanny resemblance between my old dog, Meatball, and the Grinch in my blog post on the Magic of the Grinch Tree.

Since then, people from all corners of the world have reached out, hoping to order a Grinch-inspired Christmas tree. While I was flattered, I realized that there was a better way to spread the joy. Instead of making the trees for them, I decided to teach others how to create their very own Grinch tree.

A Simple DIY Project

Crafting whimsical garden projects that ignite the passion for gardening in others is the essence of what I do here at Garden Therapy. Just like the little Whoville kids, I aspire to inspire everyone to get outside, have fun, and savor the wonders of gardening. So, let me guide you through the process of making a Grinch tree – and not just any tree, but a towering nine-foot masterpiece!

But wait, if you prefer something smaller or lack the space, you can check out my post on how to make a tabletop Grinch tree. It's the perfect way to capture the holiday whimsy in a compact version. ;)

How to Make a Grinch Tree

Now, let's get into the nitty-gritty of constructing your very own Grinch tree. In this tutorial, we'll be building an impressive nine-foot-tall Whoville Christmas tree that will make a lasting impression.

Materials

Before we begin, make sure you gather the following materials:

  • 5' potted cedar hedge (opt for a larger hedge, around 8' tall, for a more straightforward project)
  • 2-3 x 4' long, green plant stakes
  • Cedar boughs (extra branches usually sold for wreath-making or swags)
  • Green garden wire
  • Large pot tray to fit the nursery pot
  • Burlap sack
  • Ribbon to tie the sack
  • Miniature tree lights
  • 5 yards of 6" red decor mesh
  • 1 large Christmas ornament
  • Numerous smaller ornaments (e.g., clay acorns)

Make It!

Follow these steps to bring your Grinch tree to life:

  1. Choose a healthy, symmetrical cedar shrub that stands upright. I used a 5' cedar hedge, but if nurseries are open and stocked with 8' hedges, grab one for an easier time shaping your tree.
  2. Attach the green plant stake to the central sturdy stems of the hedge using wire. This extra 3' height will provide a solid foundation for your tree, with the remaining foot serving as the cascading branches.
  3. Begin adding cedar boughs to build up the top of the tree, concealing the plant stake. Start below the stake, with the leaves facing upwards, and layer more branches upwards to create a lush appearance.
  4. Secure each branch with garden wire as you continue building the shape of your Grinch tree. Leave at least a foot of cedar draping from the top of the plant stake. Reserve a few branches for later touch-ups.
  5. If the tree feels unstable, insert 1-2 more stakes in the center and secure them with wire.
  6. Once you're satisfied with the height and fullness of your tree, it's time to add the lights. Starting from the bottom, wrap miniature white lights snugly around the tree, tucking in any floppy branches along the way.
  7. The final result should be a bound, slim evergreen tree with a delightfully floppy top.

Decorate the Grinch Tree

Now that your Grinch tree stands tall and vibrant, it's time to add those finishing touches. Follow these steps to bring out its true whimsical charm:

  1. Place the pot on the plant tray and carefully slip the entire ensemble into the burlap sack.
  2. Use a ribbon to tie the sack neatly at the top.
  3. Wrap the decor mesh around the tree to enhance its visual appeal.
  4. Add a large, yet lightweight, ornament to the very top of the tree for that extra touch of grandeur.
  5. Finally, feel free to personalize your Grinch tree by adding your favorite ornaments. Opt for smaller ones to complement the slender design and maintain its signature charm.

And voila! You've now brought the whimsy of Whoville into your home with a stunning nine-foot Grinch tree.
