Elevate your holiday decor with a budget-friendly DIY Christmas tree star!

I've been having a blast creating cheap and easy DIYs to decorate our boho Christmas tree in the bedroom. But when it came to finding the perfect tree topper, I couldn't find anything that truly captured the boho vibe I was going for. Plus, I didn't want to spend a fortune on more Christmas decorations.

That's when inspiration struck! As I sat in my office, I spotted a chunky white yarn that had been lying around for a while. And that's when it hit me – a yarn wrapped star would make the perfect tree topper! I took inspiration from smaller yarn-wrapped stars and decided to create a larger version for our tree.

Before we dive into the tutorial, let me explain why I love having a star on top of our Christmas tree. It's a beautiful reminder of the Star of Bethlehem guiding the Wise Men to Jesus. While some people prefer angel tree toppers for a classic look, a star adds a touch of magic and brings in the Christian nativity story.

How to Make a Christmas Tree Star: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1. Cut out a star shape from cardboard

Start by finding a piece of cardboard large enough to cut out a star shape. I'm sure you have some Amazon boxes lying around this time of year, just like me! For reference, my finished star is about 12" across.

Use a Sharpie marker to draw a simple star shape on the cardboard. Don't worry about perfection – imperfections add character and rustic charm to your holiday tree!

Step 2. Wrap the cardboard with yarn

Choose a chunky yarn in a cream or white color for a beautiful neutral look. I recommend checking out your local craft store for something similar to what I used.

Start by tying a knot with the yarn around one of the star points. Then, begin wrapping the yarn around the cardboard star, twisting and moving as you go.

When you reach the top of a star point, secure the yarn with some glue. Add a few dots of super glue or hot glue around the tip of the point and press the yarn into the glue as you continue wrapping.

Continue wrapping and securing the yarn until the entire cardboard is covered. You may need to wrap it around the middle multiple times to fill any gaps and make the star look more three-dimensional. If desired, you can also paint the cardboard a similar color as the yarn beforehand to minimize any gaps.

Once you've covered the entire star, cut the yarn and tie a knot on the back of the star to secure it.

Step 3. Place the star on top of your tree

To add the star to the top of your Christmas tree, simply position it with two points down into the top branch. The star should sit securely. If you want extra support, you can use pipe cleaners, zip ties, or craft wire wrapped around some yarn on the back of the star and then around a few tree branches.

And there you have it – a beautiful DIY Christmas tree star that adds a rustic touch to your boho holiday decor!
