Our series “How I became a …” digs into the stories of accomplished and influential people, finding out how they got to where they are in their careers.

From her humble beginnings as a custom invitation designer to becoming the go-to planner for massive celebrity events and weddings, Mindy Weiss has firmly established herself in the event planning space. Her magical touch has graced everything from Diana Ross’ 75th birthday celebration to the wedding of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, as well as events from "The Bachelor" and the extravagant first birthday bash, Stormiworld, for Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner’s daughter Stormi.

We caught up with Mindy Weiss, the sought-after event planner, author, and lifestyle expert, to discuss her journey, her work with the Kardashian family, and what it takes to be successful in this industry.

A Passion for Creativity and Celebration

Mindy Weiss credits Martha Stewart for being one of her biggest mentors, from afar.

Question: How did you get your start in the business?

Mindy Weiss: I began my career as a custom invitation designer, creating unique and extraordinary invitations from my garage. It wasn't until one of my clients insisted that I plan the entire party that I discovered my true calling. Growing up in a home where my mother hosted fabulous gatherings, I guess you could say it was in my blood. I planned that one party, and from that moment on, I was hooked.

The Life of an Event Planner

Q: What does a typical workday look like for you?

Weiss: My day starts early, waking up at 6 a.m., and after a quick pilates session, I'm in my office by 9 a.m. Mondays are usually hectic as I catch up on phone calls and emails from the previous weekend's events. I work until around 7 p.m., then I rush to spend time with my grandchildren. Event days are even more intense, starting at 8 a.m. and lasting until midnight. It's a long day, but it's worth it to see the joy on my clients' faces.

Q: What does your creative process look like?

Weiss: Pinterest has been a game-changer for me. It allows me to understand my clients' preferences and dislikes better. Once we have a vision in mind, we design around that theme. I draw inspiration from various sources, including design magazines and websites to stay up-to-date with the latest trends. We create a setup for our clients, showcasing everything from tableware to flowers, to help them visualize their event. Surprises are great, but it's crucial for our clients to have an idea of what to expect.

Making Memories that Last a Lifetime

Q: What is your favorite thing about your job?

Weiss: Being part of people's memories is the most rewarding aspect of my work. It's an immense responsibility, and I feel honored to be included in such significant moments in people's lives. When couples look at their wedding pictures and reminisce about the day, it's a truly special feeling. At the end of the week, I look back at what we've accomplished, and it fills me with pride. That, for me, is the best part.

Q: How do you balance work, life, and such a busy schedule?

Weiss: Balancing work and personal life is a constant challenge, especially with my grandchildren now in the picture. I'm learning to set boundaries and prioritize my time better. It's not easy, but I understand the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This job demands a lot, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It's a roller-coaster ride, but one that I embrace wholeheartedly.

Advice for Aspiring Event Planners

Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?

Weiss: A common misconception is that this job is all glitz and glamour. In reality, it's a seven-days-a-week commitment that requires hard work, patience, and the ability to keep secrets. If you can wake up on a Monday morning after working long hours over the weekend and still feel excited, then this profession might be the right fit for you. Remember, it's not just about the parties; it's about delivering outstanding experiences and making people's dreams come true.
