Every year, my family and I have a special holiday tradition: watching Die Hard. I know it might sound unconventional, but it's our way of embracing the season with a twist. As we were watching the movie this past summer, I had a stroke of inspiration for a Die Hard Christmas Ornament. Broken glass and bullet casings are everywhere in the movie, so I thought, why not put them together in a clear ornament? It would be a fun and sparkly tribute to the film. And who doesn't love shiny things, right?

Now, if you're thinking, "Wait a minute! Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie!", I invite you to Google the debate and see for yourself that it's officially recognized as one. Okay, now that we've settled that, let me show you how to make this unique ornament for yourself.

Materials You'll Need

  • Clear Glass Disc Ornament
  • Brass Bullet Casings (I used 8)
  • Broken Tempered Glass (You can get it for free at an auto glass place.)
  • Red Vinyl or Red Letter Stickers
  • Gold Ribbon
  • Cricut Explore (optional)
  • Weeding Tool
  • Scissors
  • Clear Tacky Glue

Crafting Steps

Step 1: Prepare the Wording

If you have a Cricut machine, open Design Space and create two text boxes with the words "Yippee" and "Ki-Yay." Keep the width of the text no more than 3 inches. You can use Cricut's "Friday" font or any other font of your choice.

Now, if you'd like to add the last word of that quote to your ornament, go right ahead, I think it'd be very funny. I might add it to the other side once I don't have a young reader in the house, lol. Or you could add your favorite quote, but all the good ones are pretty cussy.

If you don't have a Cricut machine, you can use letter stickers instead. Simply stick them onto your ornament.

Step 2: Cut and Weed

If you're using a Cricut, cut the words you created in Step 1 and weed out the negative space.

Step 3: Apply the Words

Apply the wording to the ornament using transfer tape or an equivalent adhesive. If you don't have transfer tape, clear packing tape works just as well.

Very carefully place the broken tempered glass pieces into the ornament using a paper funnel. Be cautious not to touch the glass, as it can be sharp.

Step 7: Optional Touch - Mini Bearer Bonds

If you like, you can print, cut out, and place some miniature bearer bonds into the ornament. It's a fun extra detail.

Step 8: Secure the Ornament

Replace the ornament hanger piece and add a bit of clear tacky glue to ensure it stays in place. We wouldn't want broken glass all over the floor, especially if you're barefoot!

Step 9: Final Touch - Add Ribbon and Hang

Wrap and glue some gold ribbon around the hanger piece to cover it if needed. Tie a pretty bow around it. You can also use the remaining ribbon to create a hanger loop for the ornament.

That's it! This Die Hard Christmas Ornament is surprisingly simple to make, considering its off-the-wall inspiration. If you're unable to get empty bullet casings or prefer not to use them, you can still create a stunning ornament using just the glass and bearer bonds. You can easily find the tempered glass for free at an auto glass place.

Remember, if you know someone who loves the Die Hard movie like we do, they'll get a real kick out of this ornament. It's a unique and sparkly tribute that will stand out on any Christmas tree!
