The 2022 British Eventing (BE) season is just around the corner, and it's bringing with it a mix of new venues, a much-anticipated return, and a sad cancellation. As we gear up for another thrilling year of equestrian excellence, let's dive into the exciting calendar updates that await us.

A Promising New Addition: Mendip Plains Ston Easton

The British Eventing calendar is set to welcome a new venue this year - Mendip Plains Ston Easton. Taking place from 14th to 15th May, this event in Somerset will offer classes ranging from BE80 to BE100. What makes this addition even more special is the connection it has to the past.

The equestrian center is managed by the Green family, who have been tending to the Waldegrave Estate in Chewton Mendip for over 80 years. Interestingly, in the 80s and 90s, a BE event was held on the neighboring farmland, owned by joint organizer John Doman, who happens to be the great uncle of Hannah Smith (née Green), the center manager at Mendip Plains Ston Easton.

"We are thrilled to now have this opportunity," says Hannah. "Our ultimate goal has always been to run our very own BE fixture, and we look forward to bringing you a well-organized, fun, and welcoming weekend of eventing in the southwest."

Floors Castle Returns Against All Odds

After fears that the event would be lost, Floors Castle makes a triumphant return to the calendar for 2022. Previously announced as the fixture's final year in 2019, Jamie Innes, along with the Edward family, worked tirelessly to ensure the event's continuation. From BE80 to CCI3*-S, Floors Castle promises to be a prestigious Scottish event that shouldn't be missed.

As organizer Bruce Edward puts it, "Floors has always been one of our favorite events... We are delighted to have the opportunity to organize this prestigious Scottish event."

Oxtalls Takes Over Goring's Spring Fixture

Due to a change in farming policy, Goring's spring fixture will be hosted by Oxtalls near Stroud for one year only. Goring's other landlord has generously offered a larger piece of land below the cross-country course, allowing the event to expand in the future.

"We are sure they will run a super event," say the Goring organizers of Oxtalls, urging everyone to support them during this transitional period.

Smiths Lawn Cancellation: A Disappointing Setback

However, not all news is positive. Smiths Lawn, at Windsor Great Park, has been canceled for the third year in a row. The pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 fixtures, and unfortunately, the event will not return in 2022. The extensive work planned by the Guards Polo Club near Cumberland Gate, as well as concerns over abandonment insurance, have made it impossible to ensure a safe running of the event. But there's hope for the future, as the statement from the event mentions plans to return in August 2023.

Conclusion: A Year of Thrills and Challenges

As the 2022 British Eventing season approaches, we are met with a mix of excitement and disappointment. New venues like Mendip Plains Ston Easton and the return of beloved events like Floors Castle offer the promise of unforgettable moments. However, the cancellation of Smiths Lawn serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in organizing large-scale events during these uncertain times.

Nevertheless, we can always count on the indomitable spirit of the equestrian community to overcome obstacles and create extraordinary experiences for riders and spectators alike. Let's look forward to a year filled with thrilling competition, heartfelt moments, and the unwavering passion that unites us all.
